Irish Sailing Coastal Navigation - 7 weekday evenings (7pm - 10pm)
The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely navigate a boat by day and by night in coastal waters with which they are familiar.
This course is ideal for anyone intending to take the International Certificate of Competency ICC assessment at a later stage.
Whether you're a novice or an experienced sailor, our expert instructors will guide you through the process of planning and executing coastal passages, with a focus on safety and seamanship.
You’ll learn how to use charts and pilot books to plan coastal passages, as well as how to navigate using visual aids, such as landmarks and buoys. You'll also be introduced to electronic navigation tools, such as GPS, and how to interpret weather forecasts to plan your trips accordingly.
On completion of this you will receive an Irish Sailing certificate in Coastal Navigation.
Description
The IS Coastal Navigation Course Syllabus covers the following:
- Interpret Weather forecasts, source information and plan accordingly
- Chartwork; identify distances, plot positions, determine course to steer and more
- Understand how to utilise electronic aids to navigation; GPS, Electronic Chart Plotter and more
- Calculate tidal heights
- Identify Buoyage at both day and night
- Prepare detailed passage plans, using charts, interpreting the effect of tide and weather
- Understand and comply with IRPCS

No previous knowledge is required
Duration
This course will take place over 7 weekday evening (one session per week) from 7pm to 10pm
This course take place at the Galway Bay Sailing Club in Rinville, Oranmore, H91 W678.
Instructor
The course will be instructed by Mr John Roberts a fully experienced, accredited and approved Irish Sailing Navigation instructor.
