This RYA Radar Course is suitable for leisure and commercial skippers and navigators of small craft. Radar is popular on both saling and motor boats, Radar is an invaluable aid for pilotage, navigation and for collision avoidance.
On completion of this you will receive an RYA Radar Certificate
Description
The RYA Radar Course Syllabus covers the following:
- Basic understanding of Radar, propagation and conditions that give rise to abnormal propagation
- Setting up the radar and use of;brilliance, contrast, gain, range & tuning)
- How to measure bearing and range
- Position Fixing by Radar
- Sea clutter and rain clutter
- Radar reflectors, (passive & active)
- Navigation
- Racons
- Radar ranging
- Position fixing by EBL and VRM
- Clearing ranges & pilotage
- Parallel indexing
- Collision Avoidance
- Relative motion
- Auto plotting aids
- IRPCS rules 5 (look-out), 6 (safe-speed), 7 (risk of collision) and 19 (restricted visibility)
- Assessing risk of collision
- Closest point of approach
- Plotting and assessing the course and speed of another vessel
- Applying Rule 19
- The practical limitations of small craft radar
- Auto plotting aids
Prerequisites
No previous radar knowledge is required
A Basic understanding of navigation and collision regulations is desirable.
Duration
This course is a one day course normally held for a full Saturday and the course take place at the Galway Bay Sailing Club in Rinville, Oranmore, H91 W678.
Instructor
The course will be instructed by Mr John Roberts a fully experienced, accredited and approved RYA instructor.
